Americas Cup - Giant Multihulls are Coming
The famed race between challenger BMW Oracle Racing and defender Alinghi will take place. The question still remains exactly when and where the race will be, but it will be occurring. The boats that will be used in the racing are still a bit of a mystery, though more details will be released in the future. What is known, is that the boats will be huge (90' x 90'), will be fast, and will be multihulls.
The upcoming racing will be something different than anyone has ever seen, as two giant multis have never match raced each other around bouys. BYM News recently interviewed James Spithill of the BMW Oracle syndicate (formerly of Lunar Rossa and former-formerly of Young Australia) and got some of his opinions on what to expect for the upcoming match. James is arguably the best match racer in the world at the moment and provides some great insider insight. This is a very good read, and what struck me was just how little these guys know in terms of what to expect. This whole scenario is a learn as you go sort of thing, even though these participants are some of the best sailors in the world.
