About SailingSmarter
SailingSmarter was born during the cold winter months of 2007. I wanted to keep my sailing skills and sailing mind sharp despite the snow on the ground, ice on the water, and the fact that my front window overlooks a concrete jungle, not exactly a sailing mecca. I scoured the web looking for sailing articles and tips and did a lot of reading. I thought that since I did all of this searching, I might as well share the loot with everyone and thus decided to start the site. So...SailingSmarter.com began as a database of 'how to' sailing articles.
At first the site remained solely this database of articles from around the web, but soon after the launch I offered webspace to a good friend, a good sailor, and the first Lightning Class Boat Grant recipient, Bob King. He documented his teams season through the website, and SailingSmarter became more of a 'we' site than an 'I' site. The site also began to be a little more interactive and "community-like" as multiple people could contribute information. If you browse through our early stories, you'll note that most of them are about Bob... this is why.
Now Bob and I are developing this site into much more, though we maintain the initial (and always growing) article database. We continue to offer the most comprehensive collection that you'll find of the best sailing articles, and now offer many more interactive features. We are currently developing what we feel will be the best online sailing community around. Any sailor (that's you) can now tell the world of their sailing endeavors through our site! Better yet, all of your posts will be viewable from your personal profile page, a unique place to tell our users about your sailing experiences. Finally, one of the best and most rapidly evolving portions of the site is our groups section. You can form your own group of sailors or join an existing group. This can be anything from your entire boat class, to your yacht club, to the boat and team that you compete with. Groups are given their own webpage and any member of the group can contribute information. Information within a group can be private or public, so you can really use the page for internal matters as well as promotional matters.
We hope you enjoy the site, but fear not, the site is continually expanding. We've got lots of fresh ideas and will continue to strive to make all of our users better, faster, and ultimately smarter sailors, and to provide them with an avenue for sharing their success stories with the rest of the sailing community.
